ALLAVARE - Since 1920
Bette’s story and her incredible recipe book.
ALLAVARE would not exist today if it wasn’t for a lady named Bette and her exceptional book of cleaning remedies.
Born in 1920, Bette went ‘into service’ in London's Belgravia at the age of 14. She progressed from laundry maid to lady's maid before moving on to become housekeeper of some of England’s most prestigious homes. Bette took great pride in caring for beautiful interiors in a time honoured and sensitive way.
Throughout Bette’s career, she used laundry and cleaning remedies her mother had taught her to make. The recipes had been handed down through generations of women in her family, who only used natural ingredients that were mindful of our health and our home.
Sadly, as time went on, traditional recipes like Bette’s were mostly forgotten when the wave of mass produced chemical cleaners were introduced.
These modern chemical companies used cheap alternatives to natural plant oils and masked the toxic smell with overpowering synthetic fragrances.
What we didn’t know is that these new cleaners were made from petroleum, harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, all of which can be extremely harmful to our health and our homes.
In fear of her traditional way of cleaning being lost for good, Bette started to collate the hundreds of tips and recipes she’d used over her life and long career.
She saved them all in a book we now call ‘Bette’s Book’ (see image). This book contained a wealth of knowledge from how to make natural and gentle cleaning remedies, to creating beautiful homes and spaces to live in.
In 2009, Bette’s Book was handed down to Vanessa, and in 2021 she handed it on to her son Ed, our founder, who set up ALLAVARE to share them with you.
